Very nice, spot on....exactly the same in the U.S. with a permanent, leftist, administrative state subverting any real attempts by elected conservatives to enact their policy agendas.
Here in the USA, I've watched the insidious creep of progressivism for decades. But the acceptance by progressives of banana republic politics, as practiced by Biden, was totally unexpected. We stop it now, or we are the next Soviet Union.
Yes the tragedy is that people (on both sides of the Atlantic) have been so seduced by the MSM's electoral/voting/party-political psychorama that they never noticed what was really going on in academia - and the Progressive 'long march' through all of our civil intitutions. (Thanks for subscribing by the way.)
On point as per usual Graham. And I think you identify one of the central impediments to change. That the first step to solving a problem is to acknowledge you have one. But by acknowledging this problem , any right leaning executive simply highlights its own lack of power. We need our own Long March maybe.
I cannot disagree with your final point. I think a blunt declaration this is fundamentally broken would actually be popular. I cannot see it happening with mainstream parties but it would be a superb rallying call for one of the fringe parties like Reform.
Handled right it could be the ultimate judo move. Use the impossibility of Labour or the Tories to fix it because they are part of the same corrupt system. It needs a new sheriff in town etc.
Yes and it would be easier to be that blunt from opposition than from government. Like you I think I long for a new truly conservative political force to arise in this country on the ashes of the terminally politically bankrupt Tory Party.
Well Middle England would vote for it as would the beleaguered working class if they promise to stop mass immigration. A policy to swiftly deport the illegals and end the nonsense of the legal gravy train would ensure a landslide victory.
I too yearn for an actual conservative party that conserves Britain.
Yes I think it really has come to that....which, as a long-time Conservative Party voter, is somewhat painful to acknowledge. (By the way are you and "Secret philosopher, Whig apologist and connoisseur of fine forms." one and the same person?)
Substack subscribing seems to be more complicated than I had realised! It would simplify things if you would subscribe please as the Belgraviadave that you are here in this latest string of comments.
I'm from the USA. We are now a banana republic. I've never been inclined to follow any one person or any ideology. But if Trump doesn't win in 2024, it's over.
Yes, that's where any hope resides for me too. And perhaps parts of Eastern Europe? (although I don't feel I know enough about those countries to be sure).

I just found this post. Wow! Nailed it!

Thank you. Sadly I guess we're not holding our breath on learning of any such 'Long March-back' in the foreseeable future are we?

Just noticed that you seem to have two different Substack profiles....is that right?
